The amazing rock fin at Port Vasgo is just asking to be climbed.

The route I’m climbing here is Statue of Liberty, which is like an E4 climber’s Dalriada. Every hold is a jug, there is good, but spaced gear across the overhanging wall and the exposure on the final arete is pretty insane.

Half way up I got too hot and managed a successful 1 armed jumper removal mid pitch. 🥵

Earlier this week Beth and I had a brilliant few days in the glorious weather cycling, running, swimming and climbing in the far north of Scotland, which is an area I’d never explored before. Can’t wait to go back to climb more routes on this wall!

Last week I had the pleasure of being a host on the @mountaineeringscotland international winter meet which was a great week.

We had the full spectrum of Scottish weather and conditions which resulted in a display of the full spectrum of climbing styles that Scotland has to offer. Winter climbing, bouldering, sea cliffs and trad climbing all in one week. However the highlight, as is always the case with these things, was spending time in the evening catching up with old friends, making new ones, hearing about what everyone has been up to that day and learning about climbing in all corners of the world. Big thanks to the SMC for the use of their huts for this.

I was super lucky to partnered up with @grantwstewart from Canada who, as well as being an excellent climber, was a lot of fun to spend time with and I’m really looking forward to being shown around the Canadian Rockies some day!

The winter routes that we did climb were Apache and Cornucopia on Ben Nevis which were both excellent and I can highly recommend.

Such a fun time bobing about in the mountains the past few days with Matt.

It’s been great being able to show him the beauty of the Scottish mountains for the first time. We did lots of chatting about movement and crampon techniques and enjoyed some sunny lunch stops too!

Lots of classic ridges for us, we climbed Sron na Lairig, Ledge Route and East ridge of North top of Sob Ban. Catch you in a few weeks again Matt 👋

Last week I was out with Richard and his son Isaac. They were keen to work on their ice climbing, so we headed into Creag Meagaidh and climbed The Soldiers Song, a great III that wasn’t in the guide book. It lies on Stob Poite Coire Ardair facing the more popular routes on the opposite side of the inner coire. It turned out to have a lot of character and gave about 6 really good pitches all on ice. We talked about technique and tactics for them to implement in their own climbing and had a great day.

Great little micro expedition the past 2 days with @kaelyn.jenny and @evanmill

We went up to the Abri Simond hut, had a wonderful sunset dinner, then the next day made an ascent of the Burnier-Vogler and finished up the classic Cosmique Arete. It’s brilliant to be able share these special experiences with people.

Crack Baby! 👶

This route blew my mind and has also probably spoilt all future ice routes for me by setting the standard so high. It’s just so wild to be hanging off a frozen waterfall with 300m of air swept beneath your feet. I suspect I’ll be searching for another ice route as good for a long time. Thanks @johnmccuneguide for an ace day out a few weeks ago!

On Wednesday @cameron_lawri and I were out on the Aonach Eagach for another spectacular day of Scottish weather.

We had the whole ridge to ourselves. We were in the sun all day and it was so lovely and warm we only needed a few layers. Views of the Cuillin, Ben More on Mull and many more peaks poking up above the blanket of clouds. It felt much more like spring than December. Thanks for coming along at such short notice Cameron.

I’ve had 2 absolutely stunning days working in the Scottish mountains this week.

It’s been so peaceful to be up above the inversion with views for miles and not a breath of wind. On Tuesday Andrew and I did a big loop of Ben Nevis and Carn Mor Dearg. We climbed up the north face of the Ben via Ledge route, then across the CMD arete and enjoyed a beautiful setting sun as we walked down to the car.

Great to be working in the Scottish winter again.

First day of work for the season for me yesterday. @wildwithjaye and I climbed Aladdin’s Couloir followed by Red Gully in Coire T’Sneachda. We had an early start and lovely sunrise in the morning before a very wild top out on the second route. Great to climb with you Jaye!

Who's keen for some Scottish winter climbing?

This winter I am going to be in Scotland in December, then again from mid February until the end of the winter. So if you are keen for some early season mixed climbing in December (winter conditions have already arrived and there is snow on the hills) or if you are keen for some ice climbing and winter mountaineering later in the season then send me a message and we can start making a plan.

I will be in the Alps providing ski tour guiding, winter mountaineering and waterfall ice climbing guiding for January and early February, so if any of that takes you fancy then get in touch also. Have a great winter!

For just over a year I have owned a @mountainequipment Oreus jacket or a prototype of one. In that time I’ve probably used it more than any other item of outdoor clothing and I’ve really liked it.

It’s been with me to Nepal twice. The first time on an 8 day mission up an unclimbed super remote peak and more recently guiding on Cholatse in the Khumbu.

I carried it with me almost every day I worked in Scotland over winter as a spare layer which could be worn either as a really warm mid layer under a shell or over a shell as a thin belay jacket. I’d still use my Citadel jacket if I was going to be belaying on something hard for several hours, but I do like using the vest version for hard mixed climbing like pic 6 & 13 - adding a direct new finish to Pobble on Foinaven.

It was great for ski touring in Iceland (pic 7) and the Alps for putting on at changeovers and lunch stops.

I used it lots when working in the alps over summer. On the summit of Pigne d’Arolla in pic 2.

It was an ideal summer belay jacket when we went to Greenland for new route rock climbing.

Other activities I’ve used it for include trying to play cards in the back of a bumpy jeep (pic 10), working out with rocks in our Greenlandic basecamp (pic 14), eating tinned peaches (pic 16), cycle touring in Patagonia (Beth borrowing my Oreus in pic 18) and eating tinned pears (pic 19) 👌

The past month I’ve had a brilliant time in the Khumbu region of Nepal guiding on Cholatse (6400m) with a fantastic team of @tomripleyguiding, @supercanaleta6 and Richard the vet. We all successfully made the summit, but more importantly had a lot of laughs while doing it.

At the start of the trip we were also accompanied by Abbey, Harriet and Eileen who joined us for a spectacular trek over the Renjo La pass, which also served as our acclimatisation. It was great to finally get a view of Everest as well as several other iconic 8000m peaks.

Thanks a lot to Tom for helping organise the trip and for being great to work with. Thanks to all the clients for being such a fun and friendly group to spend time with and in particular thanks Harvey for sharing a tent with me on the mountain and for your never ending enthusiasm!

Really looking forward to more works trips like this one in the future.

I’m out in Nepal again for the 3rd year in a row, but this time I’m working. This will be my first time guiding in the Himalayas and I’m very lucky to have a super fun and friendly group to do it with. Really looking forward to working alongside fellow guide @tomripleyguiding as well.

Our plan is to warm up and acclimatise by trekking a loop round the Renjo La pass then half our team head home at that point and the other half stay on to climb Cholatse.

We’re likely going to loose signal soon and might not be in contact again until November. So apologies if I don’t get back to you before then. Bye 👋

After being back in Scotland (but not yet home) for about 12 hours I drove out to the alps for a brief but top quality spell of work.

I met up with @dillonchana who has come from a top level competitive swimming background and has carried his dedication and knowledge of training over to his climbing. We spent the start of the week developing alpine skills like moving together, tying coils and some ice techniques in a cave when the weather was biblical for a day. Then we put all the skills to use on the Integral South Ridge of the Moine. We both moved really smoothly as a team and had a great day out. The paddling pool at the Couvercle refuge was also a highlight 👌

Amazing trip to South Greenland the past month!

Simon #pleasedontcallmedaddy, @miskaizakovicova #climbingterminator, @callum.johnson.climbing #runnyyolkjohnson and I #bumcakes have spent August exploring the Torsukattak Fijord climbing new rock routes including our primary objective which was a new route on the 1350m face of “The Thumbnail”, contender for the tallest sea cliff in the world.

Getting to the wall required the use of packrafts which provided a totally new dimension to the trip for all of us. We had a real blast climbing lots high quality rock, having a humpback whale swim right by us in the rafts, witnessing an incredible display of the northern lights, fishing and foraging and lots of silly basecamp antics.

We also had our fair share of slip-ups and unexpected events such as negotiating icebergs in the dark, stormy seas and having rafts blown away in a storm. More of all these stories to follow in future post.
